Sonar 2010

Sonar 2010

This years Sonar Festival in Barcelona took place across two indoor and two outdoor stages with over three days of events focused around “advanced music and multimedia art”.  Art, audiovisual concerts, and medialab presentations next to DJ sets, electonic music, film and more.  This years bill ranged from glitches, glides and ethereal vocals from London based Nedry, to experimental organic electronica that is Caribou, to bigger named acts such as The Chemical Brothers and Dizzee Rascal.  As part of the mayhem there were a range of Interactive multimedia installations: Marcel-lí Antúnez created a video wall of cartoonish craziness that placed viewers’ faces in the action.  ReacTable, by the Musical Technology Group from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, was a video-terminal table that responded to users moving around blocks and discs, showing connections like a flow chart as it triggered clicks and clatters.  And Golan Levin and Zachary Lieberman displayed a piece called Messa di Voce that made bubbles and drew lines using a microphone and tracking system.  Lets hope i can actually make it along next year.

I recently passed by the myspace of Animal Kingdom, the latest signed for Warmer Brothers Records and noticed the beautifully illustrated design by Thomas Hicks at he top of the layout.  This is his showreel and apparently he is now working on a new video for the band, we’ll be looking out for that one.

Good Times Notting Hill Carnival Warm-up

Good Times Notting Hill Carnival Warm-up

Norman Jay has been a hugely influential character in the London music scene since the early eighties. His Good Times parties at Carnival are one the friendliest and most consistent stages there, sound tracked by his unique mix of soul, disco, boogie and house music. The night before Carnival, he heads south of the river to his spiritual home to host an official warm up party. Check out the Norman Jay mix below from the Good Times Sound System in 2003.
